Bristol Stop The War Coalition : Questions to Candidates – General Election 2005

Graeme Jones, Socialist Alternative, Bristol North West

Constituency: North West Bristol
Candidate Name: Graeme Jones
Political Party: Socialist Alternative
(1.) Did you believe Tony Blair's 45 minute claim?
No, it was part of his campaign to justify the war, a stunt which has spectacularly backfired on him.
(2.) Do you believe the invasion of Iraq was legal?
No, and any illusion that the UN is impartial has been shattered.
(3.) Do you think the world is a safer place since the invasion & occupation of Iraq?
No, the Middle East has been pushed further toward ethnic turmoil, sectarian division and war.
(4.) Do you support Military Families Against The War's call to bring the British troops home?
Yes, their campaign adds considerable weight to the anti war movement.
(5.) Do you think the Iraqi people have the right to resist the occupation?
Yes, but not a jot of support for those divisive elements fighting for their own narrow political, ethnic or religious agenda.
(6.) Would you believe Tony Blair if he said he had secret information that Syria or Iran was a threat to Britain?
No, and after Iraq, I don’t think anyone takes him at his word.
(7.) Would you support military action against Syria or Iran?
No, and I don’t think he’d get public support.
(8.) Do you approve of evidence obtained under torture being used in British courts?
No, and a dangerous precedent has already been set here and in the US.
(9.) Do you think the USA & Britain have the right to decide who can & can't have weapons of mass destruction?
No, but the US is already trying to play the role of global policeman and mould the planet to its’ economic and strategic interests.
(10.) Do you think George Bush is a threat to world peace?
Yes, but he is only the figurehead. The biggest threat to peace, stability and sustainability is the system he represents, the unplanned and anarchic profit hungry capitalist system, a system in perpetual crisis which is prepared to wage wars to defend the interests of big money.
